Michael Zagaris

Michael "Zman" Zagaris is a San Francisco-based photographerwho is known for his rock & roll and sports photography. He has served as the team photographer for the San Francisco 49ers and the Oakland Athletics for over 30 years.

Born in 1945, Michael grew up in California’s Central Valley before attending George Washington University to study politics and play football and baseball. After witnessing the assassination of Senator Robert F. Kennedy, while working as his speechwriter, Michael joined the counterculture movement to search for self, truth and meaning. While immersed in the scene, Michael began to capture unforgettable moments with bands backstage at the Fillmore Auditorium. But it was musician Eric Clapton who urged Michael to dedicate his talents to photography, which happened while they were working on a book about the influence of American blues music on British bands.

Michael's behind the scenes and "become what you shoot" perspective led to gigs covering musicians and bands including The Rolling Stones, Cream, Patti Smith, The Who, Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Led Zeppelin, Rick James, Peter Frampton, Jimi Hendrix, Lou Reed, Santana, Blondie, The Sex Pistols and The Clash.

Michael became the team photographer for the San Francisco 49ers in 1973 and the Oakland Athletics in 1981. He has covered 35 Super Bowls, 12 World Series and 14 All-Star games to date. His sports images continue to appear in numerous publications, including Sports Illustrated.

Michael currently lives in San Francisco's HaightAshbury district and continues to shoot music, sports, fashion and culture.
